Welsh Memorial at Flanders.

Just before christmas 2014, I was invited to put forward a proposal and model for the Welsh Memorial at Flanders. I was one of four artists asked to produce a quarter scale maquette of the Welsh dragon to sit on top of a stone cromlech in Belgium. The commission has come from a committee lead by Peter Jones, campaigning to erect the first monument in Belgium to commemorate the Welsh soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War. My design was ultimately chosen and I was keen to get started on the project.
Below are some press photos that were taken at the Senedd in Cardiff on the 11th of Feb 2014. It is hoped that the people of Wales will appreciate what I have tried to do with the iconic Dragon. The feedback has been so positive I am still shocked by the whole thing.

Bronze Statues of Lt Colonel Rupert Thorneloe.

In 2012 I received a commission to produce an edition of 10 bronzes for the Afghanistan appeal and Combat Stress charities. The sculpture is of Lt Colonel Rupert Thorneloe, MBE, Commanding Officer 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, who was killed while in Afghanistan in 2009. The 1/6th scale bronzes were auctioned off to raise money for the charities.

Below is a link to the 'making of Rupert', as it gets updated it will cover the process from start to finish.

MEDAL

This is my submission for the British Art Medal Society medal exhibition 2013.  The title and theme of the medal ‘A bird in the hand…’ relates to the fact that sometimes you are only able to fully appreciate the intricacies of nature when they are held.

When holding the medal in the right hand (skull side up) the viewer should be able to line up the bronze finger tips with their own, and when closing their hand the medal will flip, revealing the text on the reverse; ultimately placing the bird in the palm.

REMNANT 1: This piece was shown at Kidwelly castle as part of the 'castle/castell' exhibition during the summer of 2012.
The sculpture is made up of 16 cast iron panels bolted together. The inspiration for REMNANT 1 comes from my fascination with airfix models, de-commissioned tanks/aircraft and submarines.

Broomhill National Sculpture Prize 2011

I was one of the ten finalists in the Broomhill National Sculpture Prize 2011 exhibition. This piece called 'Fisk' is inspired by burial practices, namely mummification. 'Fisk' gets it's title from Almond.D.Fisk who patented the first cast iron casket back in the 1800's. His sealed caskets had a viewing window for people to see the deceased.  'Fisk' was highly commended during the competition.

Generally I like to leave the explanation of my sculptures to the viewer; My concept for this piece, Is that the cast iron ‘vessel’ stands for ‘man’ and his capacity to acquire, and take what he desires. It can also be compared to an ossuary and our need to preserve that which we have at present, before it is too late.

The small bird bones represent nature and it’s vulnerability in the face of man’s greed.

Lunar Ties

Medium: Cast Iron & Chain
Size: 33 x 11.5 x 5 cm

‘Lunar Ties’ depicts the Moon and its links to the Earth.

Utilising the nature of cast Iron, the rusty circular form represents the orange moon that can be seen early at night. An orange Moon is caused by particles of dust and pollution in the Earth’s atmosphere, scattering light.

The chain is the connection to the Earth, with the movement of the tides being directly affected by the Moon’s gravitational pull.

The jawbone is a cast of that of a canine, which have links to wolves and obviously werewolves of folklore. The bone also stands for the life on Earth that relies on the Moon and all of its forces.

'Mechanis Canaria'

Title: Mechanis Canaria
Medium: Cast Bronze, steel bracket

'Mechanis Canaria' (detail)

'Mechanis Canaria' is a bronze sculpture
combining man-made, and animal parts.

The original was constructed using bits
from toys, plastic and a bird of prey skull.
A plaster mould was made of this 'model',
which allowed me to make a wax version.
The wax was 'invested' and I was then able
to make the final bronze sculpture. Finally
it has been 'chased' and 'patinated'.
